“I’m Am The Magics” a Tribute to Willow Rosenberg by Artist Living Dead Girl Nicole

0

Earlier this year, I decided to rewatch the entire series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I hadn’t seen it since high school, back when I was a real-life graduate of the class of ’99, just like the β€œScooby Gang.” It was fun revisiting the show for nostalgic reasons, but my main focus was to be engulfed in the “Buffyverse” once again so I could finally check Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg off my art bucket list.

Willow was always my favorite character on the show. Despite being framed as the sidekick or best friend, I was always drawn to her more than Buffy. Maybe it was our shared 90’s fashion sense, her ability to research every monster-fighting scenario Buffy was faced with, or watching her grow into her powers, but I always saw her as the true emotional core of the series and the character I related to most. She always felt less like a fictional character and more like someone I would want to genuinely hang out with.

I really wanted to encapsulate Willow’s character growth from the beginning to the end of the series. An artistic reminder that we all have the battle of good and evil inside of us and that it is ultimately up to us to choose which path we take. With that in mind, I knew this had to be one of my signature split face portraits. One half representing the sweet, quirky and shy Willow, with the other side reflecting cold, broken hearted, β€œI’m the Slayer now” lethal Dark Willow. A part in the series that even though she becomes consumed by her overuse of power, she finally finds the courage to express so much of what Willow fans had always wanted her to say out loud, unfortunately pushing her toward nearly destroying the world with dark forces.

In the end, however, she recognizes the darkness she is heading toward and learns to control her powers. By doing so, she evolves into her true strength as a white witch, bringing light back into the world by activating all potential Slayers and saving humanity. The underdog ultimately becoming the true hero of the series in the show’s finale.

A storyline worth picking up the drawing pencils for, I completed the piece last week and am excited to share it with my art collectors. Done in pencil and chalk pastels, I call it “I Am The Magics”….

Horrorhound Weekend Indy 2019

2

Even though Paul Reubens aka Pee Wee Herman cancelled his appearance for Horrorhound we still made the trip to Indy this weekend. It was a nice little getaway for Frank and I to be in our element of horror and we had already purchased our weekend passes and booked our room. The guest list also kept growing including a few celebs I had wanted to gift my art to.

Here are a few highlight moments from the weekend…

This moment of meeting Doug Jones was worth every single wrinkle I had to draw on the Baron’s face ha ha. He has got to be one of the kindest souls we have ever met. He was so fun to talk to and he remembered seeing my Night On the Town art piece online. He even did a Baron impression when I gave it to him. He was so appreciative that he got to keep it and kept giving us thank you hugs. If you get the opportunity to meet him don’t pass it up. He really loves his fans and takes the time with everyone he meets. This photo really sums up how great it was to meet him….

I was reunited with my idol. That’s right Elvira was at the convention and this was the 3rd time I have met her but this time I got to meet her as Cassandra! Which I found to be appropriate for gifting her my Yours Cruelly portrait. I have always found her to be so beautiful in character and out of character. That is why the inspiration behind the piece was Cassandra as herself and then her transformation as Elvira. When I gave it to her she told me I was very talented and when I showed her the photo of us from 2008 with my SINderella portrait she actually remembered me giving it to her.

When I found out that Kristy Swanson was added to the guest list I was stoked. As you all know I recently finished my art piece called The Chosen One. As someone who is a supporter of originals over remakes I will always back up the statement that Kristy is the real Buffy. I have been a fan of the movie and the cast all these years. I even had to make it a point to rock my Buffy ’92 tee which she and so many other attendees had never seen and absolutely loved. But she seemed to be even more impressed with my drawing and kept hugging me and saying how talented and sweet I was for making it for her. I showed her how the split face vision works by putting your hand over one side of the face at a time and she was in awe. Even more so that she got to keep it. Not many celebs gift back so I always like to give them a shout out when they do. As a thank you Kristy signed and gave me a free 8×10 Buffy and Pike picture made out to Frank and I.

Some more celeb related highlights included sharing an elevator ride with Tobin Bell aka Jigsaw from the Saw films, getting to see another Henry Rollins show in the 3rd row and meeting Robin Tunney from The Craft and Empire Records which are also two more of my favorite 90s films.

As I post this High On The Hog photo I would like to say that Sid has been on our mind all weekend long. Yes we made the most of our time having fun at the convention but our minds were also elsewhere at the same time. As we were on our way to Indy we got a message that Sid was put in ICU and Suzie was asking that everyone please pray for him. We have been sending positive healing vibes into the universe ever since. So no matter what higher being you believe in please do the same. As you know I have become close to Sid over the years. What started as a fan/celeb moment when I first met him in 2004 has turned into a friendship that I never expected to grow over the years. I find myself very lucky and grateful to be able to say that. Yes he is an amazing actor and his career is what I have to thank for bringing him and Suzie into our lives but he is so much more than that. At times he has been like a Grandfather figure in my life with his advice, stories and always believing in my talents. And even though we may not talk everyday we always play catch up when he is in town and those moments are ones I really cherish. He is an all around good hearted person and one helluva a fighter but he needs us all right now. So please send those healing vibes and prayers his way!

Spitting Image: The Chosen One

3

kristy-swanson-buffyAnother portrait crossed off my art bucket list. This one is inspired by Kristy Swanson because I am a sucker for an original and well as we all know she was the original “Chosen One” as Buffy The Vampire Slayer in the 1992 film.

This one has been done as another one of my split face portraits. The left side representing Buffy’s everyday cheerleader self. The right side being her vampire ass-kicking self! Complete with her high school dance updo and black motorcycle jacket. Which ironically enough Kristy Swanson actually rides motorcycles.
