“Just Look At Me!” a Tribute to Helen Sharp by Artist Living Dead Girl Nicole

I was 12 years old when I first watched Death Becomes Her. I instantly fell in love with its blend of dark comedy and fantasy. The film not only entertained but also offered insights into women’s struggles with self-image and competitiveness. With its vibrant yet gothic color palette, stunning special effects makeup, and incredible performances, it quickly became one of my all-time favorites.

I’ve always adored Goldie Hawn in her other films, but Helen Sharp is definitely at the top of my list as my favorite character she has portrayed. She nails the role, exuding an irresistible blend of glamour and menace that is absolutely captivating.

So captivating that I’ve had her on my art bucket list for years. I decided it was time to bring Helen back from the dead… again. So, I rewatched the movie for the umpteenth time to decide which phases of Helen’s looks I wanted to capture. I chose to focus on her two β€œeternal youth” looks, before and after the iconic β€œLook at me, Ernest! Just look at me! I’m soaking wet!” moment. I also knew I wanted to incorporate the bold and dramatic hues from the film.

So with that all being said, here is my latest split face portrait I call “Just Look At Me!” done in pencil, chalk pastels, and colored pencil…

“Y? Because I Gotta!” a Tribute to Stanley Ipkiss by Artist Living Dead Girl Nicole

As many of you know, being a kid in the 80’s and a teen in the 90’s has had a huge influence on the pop culture art I create. What you may not know, is that it was inspiring me back then as well. For instance this is a drawing I did in 8th grade.

Childhood art done of Jim Carrey in the Mast by artist Living Dead Girl Nicole when she was in 8th grade

Our jr. high art teacher had given us a template of a simplistic face and we had to transform it into whatever we wanted to. The Mask had just came out in 1994, and I couldn’t get enough of it. My art teacher chose to feature it at an art gallery show that took place at our local mall. Unfortunately as you can see from the photo, the artwork experienced some damage due to a basement flood, but for the most part I was able to save what I could.

For some time now, I have been contemplating the idea of recreating or putting my adult spin on some of the art pieces and subject matters that inspired me when I was younger. This one in particular has been on my art bucket list for years, but I had yet to do it. I was at a point that I wanted to work on my next portrait piece and the idea of it popped up in mind again, but so did the plethora of ideas I have saved in my (art bucket list) journal. Debating what to work on next, the universe made the decision for me. I kept getting random signs whenever I would contemplate the idea of starting anything. As someone who always takes a moment to acknowledges when the universe sends her signs, I naturally would point them out to my husband and he even agreed it was meant for me to focus on this piece. I jokingly say that Loki was calling to me and I am so glad that he did!

So with all that, I present to you my latest split face portrait I am calling “Y? Because I Gotta!” A spin on the quote from the movie as well as my intuition telling me it was time to pick up the drawing pencils, chalk pastels, and colored pencils.

Maybe one day I will get to P-A-R-T-Y (or just be lucky to enough cross paths) with the real Stanley Ipkiss aka Jim Carrey so I can gift him the original art piece and tell him what an impact his films have had on me over the years, the inspiration he has had on me as an artist (both as a 13 year old and 43 year old), and most of all the smiles he has put on my face (especially when I needed it most). Until then I hope the universe will lead him to stumble across this post and in turn it puts a smile on his.

Does Jim keep you smiling as well? Does this art piece speak to you? I have made-to-order* prints and t-shirts listed in myΒ EtsyΒ shop. Apply coupon code SMOKIN to your order at check out and get 10% off either!

What’s This? A Custom Jack Skellington Barrette Makes The Perfect Gift!

2

What’s this? It’s a Jack themed Dead Girl Decay Barrette that I was commissioned to make for a return client in the UK! For the last 5 years he has commissioned me to make a new themed hair piece for his wife and its the first thing she opens on Christmas morning. This year he chose Jack Skellington. A character I have held dear to my heart since I was a kid.

Due to me always wanting to make my creations unique and there being so many Nightmare Before Christmas things out there, I decided to hand sculpt and paint the center piece for this one instead of resurrecting something store bought. This included Jack’s face, his bat bow tie and some whimsical Tim Burtonesque swirls for each side. I had never used this specific medium for sculpting so I challenged myself to try something new and am so glad that I did. Here is how it came out.

Since the barrette was going to be just black and white I added a touch of iridescent glitter here and there as a sparkly representation of when Jack first discovers snow. I found the perfect feather fringe from Moonlight Feather Inc. I loved how thin and wispy it looked and the alternating black and white gave it a striped look that gave me total Jack suit vibes.

When I sent photos to the client weeks ago he loved it and could not wait to gift it to her. Today I received these photos and a message from him on Etsy telling me how much his wife loves it too. She even made it a point to pose with a little Jack figurine! How great are these?….

It means so much to me to know that my creations continue to make someone else’s holidays brighter and I truly look forward to the “Ok I got this year’s theme picked out” message I get a few months prior to the holidays. I have always loved doing custom orders because I feel like they are a creative challenge and they really get my creative blood flowing. This one in particular also allowed me to discover a new medium that I am already using in my other creations. A win win all around.
