Days Of The Dead Indy 2017

5

Days Of The Dead Indy 2017 (5)We just got back from Indy. Our friend gave us some weekend passes for Days of the Dead. It worked out perfectly because I really wanted to give Sid (Haig) my “Shit The Bed” split face portrait. I was waiting to see when he would be back in Chicago but these passes ended up working out perfectly. Frank and I had been discussing a small summer getaway, we had the extended long weekend already for the holiday and most importantly Sid was on the guest list. His birthday is in July so I thought how perfect is it that I will be give it to him before his birthday. So I made sure to wrap up my portrait (red and blue of course) and we were on our way!

Sid loved the portrait but he also took the time to catch up with us over dinner and drinks. These cons tend to get pretty busy so it was nice to have some sit down time with him since we don’t get to see him all the time. He is such a wise man. We took in so much of his knowledge, advice and enjoyed every minute of the quality time we got to spend with him. He also really loved seeing my Spaulding Skull tattoo (he had previously emailed me telling me it was “so fucking cool” right after I had gotten it) and signed an autograph for my Dad. I am truly grateful to have such an amazing person that I can call a friend. Days Of The Dead Indy 2017 (1)

I also was pretty happy to see that Felissa Rose (Angela Baker from Sleepaway Camp) was added as a last minute guest addition. So Frank and I decided to pay her a visit. Seriously one of the sweetest guests to meet at a con. She kept telling me how cute I was. How much she loved my Carrie/Barbie mash up shirt (she even took a photo of it) and kept saying how great Frank and I were together. I highly recommend meeting her if you get a chance at a con.

Here are some great shots Frank took of me with some of the decor they had up at the con. The Halloween house was really well put together and I was drawn to it right away. The zombie girl eating intestines… well I told her I didn’t have too much of mine left so she shared some with me ha ha.

The weekend in general was much needed little getaway and we had a blast. Here are some photos of our horror haul we brought home with us. We had to stay with in our budget (due to a hotel room dilemma that cost us more then we expected) but I think we did pretty good for what we could get.

Frankenhooker, They Live and Beetlejuice T-shirts, Critter Action Figure, Leatherface Political button, Elvira, Brainscan and Alien patches!

Spitting Image: Well Shit The Bed!

4

I finished an art piece last night that I am not ashamed to say … I am very proud of. I can’t help but look at it and smile because it came out just how I envisioned.  So here is a little background of how this piece was master minded.

The other day I was reminiscing over this specific photo…

v__41d7

….and more so the moment it was taken.  It is a special photo to me because it was taken by my husband Frank when I was reunited with Sid after years of being M.I.A from horror cons (and pretty much life) because of all my health scares, surgeries, hospital stays and recovery. Sid and Suzie were following my journey on GoFundMe along with the rest of my family and friends so he knew just how happy I was to be out and able to see him. He stopped me in the hall, pointed me out of the crowd and said “you’re out amongst the people!!!” and gave me a big hug. It was such a nice reminder of how far I had come with my health and how I was finally getting back to life and being out doing what I love and seeing the people I admire so much again.

Now as you all know from all my Sid related posts that this photo is not of the first time I met Sid.  I have been blessed with many memorable moments with both him and his wife Suzie and consider them friends.

And as you also know this is not the first time I have been inspired by Sid either.  I even dressed up as a female Captain Spaulding last year for Halloween and also have a Captain Spaulding tattoo. I also drew Sid and Suzie and mailed it out to them as a surprise gift when they got married back in 2007.

sidBut the first time I drew him was back in 2004. Rob Zombie’s old website had a very active message forum and they posted they were looking for House of 1000 Corpses art for a fan based book. I immediately got to work at drawing Sid as Captain Spaulding and Howdy Folks was created. I remember being so pumped that I actually finished it in only a few days! The sad thing is I dropped the piece in the mail and it has never been seen again. The book never happened and despite including a self addressed stamped envelope and a letter saying to please return it if it was not selected… it is still unknown what ever happened to it. There are 2 prints ever made of the piece and Sid and myself are the owner of them. So I guess that makes the prints that much more special. But with gifting out so many of my originals to celebs that I admire and Sid being so much more closer to my heart, I wanted to give him an original to replace the one I was never able to give him.

Since my split face portraits give me more of a challenge and allow me to be more creative, I decided to to do a new one that reflects his fun personality and why I love him and his Captain Spaulding character so much.  I couldn’t help but call it “Well Shit The Bed!” because it’ a fun joke about the first time we met and my screen name on his site.

I already emailed it to Sid and can not wait to see him again to give it to him and see his reaction.

For those of you that admire Sid as well you can purchase prints and shirts of the piece in my Etsy Shop!

Villain Arts Chicago Tattoo Con 2017

6

Kelly Doty BarretteThis weekend Frank and I attended the Villain Arts Chicago Tattoo Convention. Not only was it a great networking event for artists but we were able to get some work done and I was able to meet the extremely talented Kelly Doty.

For those of you that don’t know her, Kelly Doty is an extremely talented tattoo artist who recently was a finalist on Ink Masters. As a tattoo enthusiast and “collector” I have watched Ink Masters since the very first episode. But it wasn’t until Kelly was on the show that I was so awed by someone’s work that I anticipated every week so I could root for her. I won’t even lie.. when she didn’t win I was bitter. I just really thought she deserved the title and find her work to be incredible. So when I found out she was going to be at the con I decided to make her one of my Dead Girl Skullerfly Decay Barrettes… completely inspired by her.

When I met her I told her I made her something and when I told her it was a barrette she said “Girl you are speaking my language” and dug into the gift bag. She loved it and ripped the rose out of her hair.. threw it to the side and said “stupid rose” and immediately put my barrette in it’s place ha ha. She was an absolute delight to talk to and when I told her I loved her work she pointed at her new barrette and said “I love your work”. When I said goodbye and thanked her for rocking my barrette right away she said “try to stop me from wearing it” ha ha ha. Here is the photo a friend at her booth took of us during our meeting..

Chicago Tattoo Con 03-19-17 (5)

And the day just got better because our tattoo artist, Dave Togtman (of Black Devil Tattoo) was working the event and reserved time for both Frank and I to get more work done.

Frank got the netherworld priest added to his wrist as a part of his Beetlejuice sleeve and I got my Neo Traditional style Captain Spaulding skull on my calf next to my Baby Firefly pinup. These pics were taken right after each piece was finished. He did an amazing job on both of them and we couldn’t be happier with them.

On top of it Dave also gave us this amazing art piece he had on display at the show. It will definitely be getting framed and hung up in our tomb sweet tomb!
